2ND ARTIFACT RESEARCH: adult storytelling

I had found an interesting article online called Storytelling in learning: A tale as old as time https://www.cursim.com/blog/storytelling-learning-a-tale-as-old-as-time/. In the article they talk about the importance of storytelling as an adult. how a story that is told well can create empathy and emotional connections. this is the same with using visuals, which has long been used by humans to create understanding and document a time. visual communication can also enter the long term memory much easier than text.

through my work I wanted to create a visual for communication for the feeling of isolation and loneliness felt by many during the COVID 19 pandemic. How there are boundaries and things that are blocking us from touch or connections with other people. i had experienced isolation and loneliness through the pandemic myself and noticed when i went for daily exercise it was evident that elderly people who were walking alone and stayed away from people could be going through the same thing, furthermore people who were high risk are isolated further as they were recommended to stay at home, isolating themselves further from the world. I wanted the pages to be physical barriers created through the translucent and delicate layers of hand made paper representing the difficulties for many people who are experiencing loneliness. the torn holes in the paper create the purpose of enocragmento to touch for the viewer to make their own way through the book and decide what its importance/ sigificancei s for themselves.

Much like historical drawings found in caves and similar, they document a story or a time in history, I would like to think creating a book that explores the problem of loneliness through the pandemic can allow people to explore how it may have felt though artistic representation. I found a importance in using newspapers that were documenting the pandemic, not only for the material quality but the significance of all the information (possibly further isolating content within them).

PROF PRACTICE: opportunities

Trust New Art- “Since 2009, Trust New Art has been continuing this important creative legacy by connecting people to our places through contemporary arts.”

Trust New Arts is an art program lead by the National Trust in partnership with Arts Council England and Arts Council of Wales. they have previously work with 300 artists. The projects are planned 3-4 years in advance, (this is handy for me to know!) this could be something to become aware of in 1-2 years time. They work in an active commissioning way rather than applications, this would be where I would target them through social medias, as well as this they often advertise open calls through Facebook and twitter, These opportunities are currently closed at the moment due to COVID.

ARTIST RESEARCH: Jennifer Davies

  • Jennifer Davies is a paper maker, sculptor and constructor, using hand made Japanese paper manipulated, twisted, collaged and constructed to create forms that explore the materialities of fibrous material.
  • She often collages and constructs with both hand made paper and pulp.
  • Often combining stitch and dye.
  • Heavily inspired by natural textures and materials.

  • Davies work has made me consider focusing more on natural inspiration, working similarly with construction and collage? This would work well to make my work look less two dimensional ( I want to explore manipulation of paper, with more of an interest in pushing it into 3D).
  • It could be interesting to work with collage and multimedia, previously I have used stitch in my paper work which creates another textural dimension as well as increase the depth detail.

ARTIST RESEARCH: Robbin Ami Silverberg

About Pearl, 2009 / Unique in a series of 5 / Archival inkjet on Dobbin Mill papers, embedded mica
Size: 9.5” x 7” x 1.25”

Robbin Ami silverberg artist book “About Perl” explores Silverbergs memory of her mother through the senses of touch. She selected materials that explore the sense of ageing in relation to her mother. this one off artist reflects a very personal response of the artist and the selected use of papers allows for an effective exploration of the development of an ageing skin without making it obvious, as well as allowing the audience to connect to the theme of the book through touching of the tactile form.

The combination of materials effectively emits the feeling of age, texturally the materials wrinkle bolge and creese in the same way the skin does as it goes through ageing. the binding of this book encloses the material textures within the book making the connection more personal and private when the viewer holds the form.

This artist influences the textural qualities of the paper and has made me consider the importance of the sense when making books, as they are tactile forms, usually with little text their impact and understanding by the viewer may differ altering the understanding of the form, therefore the form should speak for itself or should be free to interpretation.

PRESENTATION: Gesamtkunstwerk, Pecha Kucha

When considering what makes a ideal, the objects artists and locations that came to mind were the ones that had an emotive sense of nature. As I was selecting my 15 objects I started to see similarities from one object to another. I have always been drawn to texturally beautiful things, nature, sculpture and tradition. I have also always been fascinated by fables and mythological creatures.

If I were to do this presentation again I would consider categorising my Gesamtkunstwerk objects into related ideas or objects. finding stronger connections between each. looking back on this task I was disappointed by the delivery of my ideas. I was thrown by the 15 seconds. I feel I was trying to fit too much information into the time and should have focused more on the way the objects made me feel.

The best part about this task for me was the feedback I got given for my chosen objects in relation to my own practice. I was intrigued by the words that came up and how accurate they were to my work and interests.

The words from my group were: Photography Home ceramic land art inspired by nature detail bookbinding Kraft handmade storytelling texture tactility detailing iconic vibrant luscious ilott on canvas storytelling multimedia binding material diversity gorgeous fantastical sculpture site-specific generation duration ephemeral representative powerful semiotics kinetic connected Collection Beautiful juxtapose physicality whimsical magical texture colours niche next media contemporary hybrid traditional methods intense colour colourful colours patterns atoms abstract native ad nature and animal illustrations storytelling meaningful aquatic ocean life narrative personal development and and traditional and contemporary

The 6 chosen words for me were: NATURE, DIVERSITY, JUXTAPOSE, TRADITIONAL METHODS, ILLUSTRATIONS, STORYTELLING
