LOCUS PROJECT: ZOE PREECE

Looking into the work by Zoe Preece inspires me because “As an artist Zoe is drawn to thresholds and to in between spaces”.

This understanding about space between and within a form interests me and I find is something that relates pretty heavily with my work, this understanding about space can also influence sensory aesthetics within her work.

From this work I want to focus on ways I can enhance the feeling of negative space SO moving Forward I am going to look at how forms can work in multiples and explore this tension created by space.

LOCUS PROJECT: GROUP CRIT

This meeting gave me a chance to reflect on my own work and see the development of others projects.

I wanted to discuss the themes behind my experimentation as I want to push these ideas further or in other directions.

It was advised to me by Pip to look at Craft in The Bay, Makers Guild Wales and Collect as inspiration. She also said my work reminded her of sensory sculptures that could be interactive, This I want to explore further by introducing textures to my newly identified method to create these forms.

LOCUS PROJECT: TEXTURE RESEARCH

Using a PDF from the previous facture module, I have looked into ways of texturising clay, this is an important aspect of my work and I wish to explore these textures through both combining the textures into the materials and using found objects to create the textures. looking at this document has inspired me to create textures by using objects. I am going to undertake a texture experiment using tiles so I can explore the most successful way to obtain texture.

I found the types of textures and patterns created by objects in these photos interesting as I wouldn’t expect these to be created using the objects.

LOCUS PROJECT: BALLOON EXPERIMENTS

I want to start exploring ways in which I can create these distorted forms using plaster and balloons in order to create these forms, I want to undertake this experiment to allow me to explore successful methods that are reliable in order to repeat to create multiples.

These are how I ideally imagine the forms will turn out.

This method involves using a bottle filled with liquid plaster and transferring it to a inflated balloon to fill the empty space created by the transfer of air between the two forms. if this is successful the forms should hold the smooth shape of the ballon and also allow me to manipulate the form.

DOING THIS EXPERIMENT:

I found great success with this and I feel confident I can continue to use this method to explore the distortion further and see how far I can push it before they break.

when i do this experiment again I want to be more prepared as the plaster set very fast limiting the amount of distortion I could create, to avoid this I will add more liquid to the plaster so there is a longer setting time so therefore more manipulation time, using string and bulging the forms outward.

LOCUS PROJECT: ARTIST INSPIRATION

Dame Barbara Hepworth, Image II 1960Tate. (2019). ‘Image II’, Dame Barbara Hepworth, 1960 | Tate. [online] Available at: https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/hepworth-image-ii-t00958 [Accessed 25 Feb. 2019].

Hepworth’s work inspires me because of the material manipulation, I enjoy the smooth qualities of the form, although for my project I want to primarily focus on texture the form is also an important aspect to my practice, further inspiring me to create forms using man manipulated materials and form them into obscured smooth flowing forms.

North’s work has been my source image for kicking off my project, I am interested in the material and form of these sculptures. His use of heavily inspired man-made materials of: “cement, coal ash and marble” combined with the softer globe shape creates a really interesting juxtaposition of soft vs rough, textured vs smooth, an idea that is relevant to my exploration. I am keen to explore both the use of man- made materials and shapes similar to North, although I want to explore ways in which I can obscure the shapes and distort them in a way that bulges the surface and contrast the smooth and rough more.

LOCUS PROJECT: GLASS WORKSHOP

IMG_6647We where shown the technique of cutting, fusing, and slumping glass during this workshop, as well as applying paint and decoration using glass paints and a variety of copper materials. this process works by trapping or layering the glass up ready to be fired in the kiln where the glass fuses together.

I wanted to use this workshop as an opportunity to experiment and explore this process, therefore I wasn’t focused on a theme, more exploring all possible techniques available.

I dont think this will be relevant to what I am looking at for this locus project, although I will always consider it as a technique if it became relevant as i really enjoyed undertaking this workshop.

LOCUS PROJECT: SLIP GLAZING WORKSHOP

IMG_6618 were shown the technique involved in the surface decoration process involving slip glazing, using sgraffito- the Italian word for scratching (in this case scratching the design into the surface of the clay). we were given slabs of leather hard clay, this we were told was the best state to use the clay in. we also experimented with using paper resist and inlaying.

During this time, I wanted to explore the range of techniques demonstrated to explore ways I could capture surface pattern and texture.

This method of underglaze, obtains the matte qualities of the clay as the slip is pigmented clay, this means one fired the forms could be refired with a clear glaze to make the forms shiny.

Although I enjoy experimenting with this technique, I feel it has limited use with my locus project as I would rather the texture be physically created from the material instead of just the surface.

LOCUS PROJECT: PRESENTATION OF IDEAS

For this Locus project I will be exploring a variety of textural surfaces, such as natural and man-made materials, both studying and analysing their physical structures and properties in order to use this as inspiration to incorporate into my own practice. By implementing both smooth and textural surfaces in my design, I will be able to clearly portray the juxtaposing qualities of these forms.

I will also study these physical structures in order to identify how they interact individually and together as multiples. To do this I want to use explorative methods of working using clay, plaster, concrete and other various materials.

I want to be able to identify my personal strengths of working with these materials, and to build up a strong personal body of work that portrays the type of maker I am.

As a result of completing this Locus project, I aim for it to expand my breadth of knowledge within this subject, and to push my exploration further, taking inspiration from other art and design practitioners.

LOCUS PROJECT: BRAINSTORMING

Being given the locus project brief, I have developed on the theme of shape and texture. I find this brief scary as it is so broad and a chance to expansively explore a theme and material exploration.

As part of the project briefing we had to bring along an image that identifies what we aspire too in the art world, what inspires us as practitioners, I chose the work of Jamie North.

This work, we then categorised into a context so that we could identify where it sat within the world of art. I decided with my peers this was a piece of sculptural work made for the purpose of art as apposed to craft or product design.

from this I started to think about the type of work I want to make for this project. this meeting helped me to start thinking about:

considering my:

skills; making abilities

context; where does it belong in the world of art and design

ideas; creative thinking and designing

I am interested in exploring the following in my locus project

sculpture, plaster, clay, pattern, texture, distortion, surface manmade vs organic.
