PROF PRACTICE: research into opportunities, National Trust

The national trust offers opportunities to artists for residencies to use the National trusts heritage and landscape for inspiration for their work.

This would be something I would be interested in pursuing as an end goal. Having the availability of natural inspiration, a place to collect and forage materials and reflect. from what I can see they only usually except established artists so this would be something to aim for after the initial 5 years. this would also be a great opportunity to widen my inspiration beyond locally.

The National trust looks to be connected to arts council England and Currently offers commissions and residencies for a number of their properties. They are currently advertising the Holy Island of Lindisfarne for an artist residency. This shuts this year, although I am not in the position to apply yet, it is interesting to see how often these get offered up and the variety of locations they offer.

From what I can see, they like the artists to have work that is inspired by nature, developing and widening their process, working from site. I have found a previous application PDF document for a residency for Quarry Bank, Wilmslow, Cheshire. Explaining the selection process and the opportunity. Although I would not be interested in this residency it is helpful for me to see the application process.

This is interesting to see what is required for application, they state on their website that they take any artist at a professional stage of their career, although this could potentially be me after graduation I think it would be something I would get more benefit from when I have settled into my practice further.

It is beneficial to know the funds and what is covered in the residency, an artist fee, travel and material costs. It also states in the document you get given a 3 bedroom apartment form the duration of the residency.
