North’s work has been my source image for kicking off my project, I am interested in the material and form of these sculptures. His use of heavily inspired man-made materials of: “cement, coal ash and marble” combined with the softer globe shape creates a really interesting juxtaposition of soft vs rough, textured vs smooth, an idea that is relevant to my exploration. I am keen to explore both the use of man- made materials and shapes similar to North, although I want to explore ways in which I can obscure the shapes and distort them in a way that bulges the surface and contrast the smooth and rough more.
