were shown the technique involved in the surface decoration process involving slip glazing, using sgraffito- the Italian word for scratching (in this case scratching the design into the surface of the clay). we were given slabs of leather hard clay, this we were told was the best state to use the clay in. we also experimented with using paper resist and inlaying.
During this time, I wanted to explore the range of techniques demonstrated to explore ways I could capture surface pattern and texture.
This method of underglaze, obtains the matte qualities of the clay as the slip is pigmented clay, this means one fired the forms could be refired with a clear glaze to make the forms shiny.
Although I enjoy experimenting with this technique, I feel it has limited use with my locus project as I would rather the texture be physically created from the material instead of just the surface.
